Class on 2/19/14

Warm Up: 10 ways to answer the question: How are you? Students wrote unique answers and then during role call they had to listen and give a answer that had not been used previously.

Review of the 100 most commonly used words. Students analyzed and studied and then took a practice quiz. The words were:

Discussion of homework procedures and best practices to learn. Go above and beyond. Listen to the CD that came with your book!

Discussion of ID and Tours of Cañada College.

Review of pages 2 and 3 in the Workbook:

Students read silently page 8 of the Student Book and the whole class answered questions on the top of page 9.

Homework: 

  1. Finish Page 9 of the Student Book
  2. Read current news stories. Pick one story and write the title of the news story on the top of the page. Then write a paragraph about it. Make sure you answer: What is the story about? Who, where, why?

Class on 2/12/14

Warm Up:
Whole class pronunciation of adjectives listed on page 5 of Student Book.
Partner discussions: students chose from the same adjectives Example: "I was frightened when the nurse called me from my daughter's school."

Students wrote 3 past tense sentences about activities last night. Then they interviewed a new partner. Then they prepared a very short oral presentation on the person they talked to.

Micro Presentation Rules

  1. Stand up
  2. Scan the room one time
  3. Choose one person to look at the whole time
  4. Say: "Good evening. I talked to _________________. She (and mention three past tense verbs). Thank you."


Students got Quiz #1 returned.

Whole class reviewed pages 3 and 4 in the Student Book.

Whole class discussion of the difference between:

  • Copy
  • Quote
  • Paraphrase (use your own words)


Homework: 

  • Complete Workbook pages 2 and 3. 
  • Write 10 sentences about your time off this week. Try to use new simple past tense verbs

Homework:
1. write 10 sentences describing the skills you have used in current or past job. Discuss both Hard and Soft skills. 
2. Read and study page 4 of the student book.

Class on 2/5/14

Warm Up: Students wrote 8 sentences on 4 topics. They practiced their responses with a partner.

The instructor demonstrated how to give a very brief presentation. Rules included:

  • Stand up.
  • Scan the room.
  • Make eye contact with one person (in the center of the room).
  • Talk to that one person only.
  • Say the following:
  • "Good Evening. My name is _________. (insert one sentence from practice). Thank you."
  • Sit down. 

Each student gave their short presentation. The instructor gave some general and specific critiques.

In pairs students researched current news stories on CNN.com or NPR.org.
The students answered the following:  Who? What? Where, and When. Single word answers were satisfactory. Each pair read their title allowed. Some pairs volunteered to read their other answers.

Students took a practice quiz on the following:
